What Does the Father of the Groom Wear?
The father of the groom outfit sits in the same register as his son, one step quieter: a prince coat, a bandhgala or a restrained sherwani in a deeper tone than the groom’s, cut from a compatible fabric. Not a business suit he already owns.
That last part is where it usually goes wrong.
The default ‘father of the groom outfit ‘— and why it fails
Most fathers plan to wear a suit. It is the path of least resistance, it is already in the wardrobe, and it disappears completely.
Every other man at that reception is wearing a suit off the shelf. A Hugo Boss or an Armani still reads as some guy in a suit.
That argument is usually made to grooms. It applies harder to fathers, because the father is in more photographs than almost anyone except the couple — the ceremony, the stage, the family group, every handshake at the door. The outfit is worn for a day. The photographs are looked at for thirty years.
Complement, do not compete
Dress the party one step below the groom. The groom’s outfit is decided first. Everything else is built to frame it.
In practice the father goes deeper and quieter where the groom goes lighter and more worked. If the groom is in an ivory sherwani carrying heavy embroidery, the father sits in a deep tone with the work pulled right back — same fabric family, same finishing, visibly the same hand. What you are avoiding is two men in near-identical outfits, which reads as a uniform, and two men in unrelated outfits, which reads as an accident.
The event still governs. A Walima and a Sikh or Hindu reception are not the same brief — darker, more formal registers tend to suit the Walima, while receptions more often go to a tuxedo or a dark prince coat. The father dresses for whichever event he is standing in, not one outfit for the whole week.
When to sort it
At the same time as the groom, in the same room. A bespoke outfit takes eight to twelve weeks plus fittings, and a father who books three weeks behind his son gets whatever is left. Fitting them together is also the only way the palette gets decided once, rather than negotiated three times by phone — which is what the Outfit Planner is for.
We fit grooms, fathers and brothers in one sequence at both showrooms.

FAQ
What does the father of the groom wear to an Indian or Pakistani wedding?
A prince coat, a bandhgala or a restrained sherwani, in a deeper tone than the groom’s and with the embroidery pulled back. The aim is the same fabric family and the same finishing, so the two read as related rather than identical.
Should the father of the groom wear a suit?
He can, and most do. It is also the choice that disappears in photographs, because nearly every other man in the room has made it. If there is one event to dress properly for, it is the one where he is standing on stage.
Should the father’s outfit match the groom’s?
No. Two near-identical outfits read as a uniform, and two unrelated ones read as an accident. The groom is decided first and everything else is built to frame him.
When should the father of the groom order his outfit?
At the same time as the groom. A custom piece takes eight to twelve weeks to make, plus fittings on top, so a father who starts three weeks later is choosing from what is left.
Does the father of the groom need a different outfit for each event?
Usually yes, though fewer than the groom. He dresses for the ceremony he is standing in — the register of a Walima and a reception are not the same.
