What to wear to a Mehndi

A waistcoat over a kurta, with trousers. Green is the traditional choice and still the most common one, though it is not a rule.

This is the least formal thing you will wear all week, which grooms hear as "it matters least". It is usually the opposite.

The Mehndi is where most of the photographs come from

The main ceremony is short, seated and formal. The Mehndi runs for hours, everybody is moving, and the camera is out the whole time. Proportionally, more of your wedding album comes from this event than from the day everyone plans for.

So the thing to avoid is the outfit chosen last, in a hurry, because it is "only the Mehndi".

It is also the one day you can wear colour

Everything else in the week is governed. The main ceremony is light and heavily worked. The Valima is dark. The Mehndi is the one event where the palette is genuinely open — greens, yellows, oranges, colours you would not put on any other day of your life.

Take it. It is the only event of the week where the answer can be personal rather than prescribed.

Why a waistcoat rather than a full sherwani

A sherwani at a Mehndi is heavy in every sense — hot, structured, and wrong for an event where people sit on the floor and dance. The waistcoat and kurta carry the occasion without carrying the weight, and they photograph as a distinct look rather than a lighter version of your wedding outfit.

That is the same principle as everywhere else on this site: do not wear the same kind of garment twice across your own events. The Mehndi is the easiest place to get that right, because the correct answer is already a different garment.

Complement her

She will be in something bright and heavily worked with her hands occupied for most of the evening. We never try to match the bride. We complement her — which on a Mehndi usually means picking up one tone from her outfit rather than the whole palette, so the two of you read as a pair without looking like a theme.

Timing

Waistcoat and kurta sets are quicker than a sherwani, and we hold finished pieces in both showrooms. Bespoke still runs eight to twelve weeks plus fittings if the cloth or the work is specific.
